We really enjoy our current couch and know the quality is good. Picked out new fabric which is also offered in the Flex Steel brand.

If you really love the old couch, I would re-do it. Also, you may want to consider having the seat cushions replaced. You can use foam that is 'automobile' grade, the density lasts much longer than what you normally get. We had someone re-do ours for $300, the lady did this for a living. The couch was completely re-upholstered and the seat foam replaced. It looks factory-new still, after another 10 years. This was for a sleeper sofa, so you know how pricey they can be! ;-).
The person who does the re-covering should show you fabric swatches, so you get upholstery grade fabric.

If I had no experience with Flex Steel, I'd say buy new. Being a professional Interior Designer, I have experience with Flex Steel, and I would say that their product feels more "healthcare" than residential. If you are used to the Ethan Allen sofa, stick with it.

Reasons for upholstering are....the piece is antique, the piece has sentimental value, you love the basic design and can't replace it. Otherwise, buy new.......
