I have an AKC registered mini-schnauzer. He is from a championship blood line. My vet has suggested many times "studding" him out. I am seriously thinking about doing this. The breed isn't common for my area (I had to drive 2 hours to pick him up). What are the contracts like for studding your dog? Costs involved to stud owner? I would like "pick of the litter" verbiage in the contract. I still have about 3 months to go, but I don't know how soon to put the ad in the newspaper or on Craig's List.

Help me!!!

Dane lover---i'm here for advise. Can you actually tell me where to go with this? I've looked on the AKC website. Maybe talk to the breeder I got my baby boy from?

Sorry...I really shouldn't leave an answer as I don't know anything about this...but I do find the term..."pocket puppy" both derogatory and at the same time quite silly...should I report abuse???

I don't know much about a mini-schnauzer..Do they come in different sizes the reason I ask this is because some breeder will put Imperial in front of the Shih
Tzu name to get bigger bucks from their puppies and there is no such thing as a Imperial Shih Tzu's , Pocket puppies and toy Shih Tzu they are only one kind and that is a Shih Tzu. Putting that all to side. Every Breeder is different as you might get a lot of different advice here Take each idea and make up you contract from things you like.

If you want pick of the litter you need to state that in your contract. There are a lot of contract on the net you can look at and write what you want. List everything you expect or want ..You have the owners of the female sign it. You keep a copy and she keeps a copy. The stud fees are the price of a puppy or pick of the litter..some breeder wants both..That is up to you. The female should come to you and you should set this up ahead of time, because timing is really an issue when you go into studding your dog out. Always make sure the female is AKC register, make them show you proof of medical records and AKC papers.

This is how I do my stud service. I charge a 100.00 non refundable at the time of matting.. I will collect the other 300.00 when I sign the litter papers. If they don't have any puppies I do not charge them any money. I am not in it for the money I do it because I love the Shih Tzu breed. So if they don't have puppies I am not going to charge them anything Some breeders charge up front and if the first time it doesn't take you can have a second breeding but they don't give the money back. That is up to you what you want to do.. but no matter what you do you need to get everything in writing..that way when puppies are born there is no question on what to do. Your stud has to be a year old, the female you stud him with always make sure she is two years old.

Studding out you dog take a lot of your time up beause you have to change things for the female. So any plans you may have it could change. So be prepared for that. I make the owners stay with their dog incase the female gets upset during matting she can calm their dog down. If there is no trouble , then we watch from the side lines just in case. Read what everyone has to say and take the best part of each one and write yourself a contract. But make sure it is what you want. Good luck to you and if you need any help I would be willing to do that.

Let me add this too.....
I have to add this. My dogs didn't come from a champion blood line. They have never been shown. If everyone bred like you all want then there would be no regular purabreds as pets. I know if you all are saying show quality you do know how these dogs are kept..Some of them never hit the floor, for fere the capet will cut off pieces of their hair. They are pamper and clean and always in the grooming room. They are very well treated, but that is what they are they are show dogs not pets. Mine you can take out side and let them get dirty because they can be wash off, you can play fetch with mine or just let them play like normal dogs.. My are pets I sale them as pets. My puppies are very healthy and I keep in close contact with each owner I sale to. My responiblites don't end when I sale a puppy. It also states in my contract for any reason , no matter how age, if the owner doesn't want the dog or no longer can care for it that said puppy comes back to me. I am not a back yard breeder, and I am not a puppy mill. I am just a breeder of pet Shih Tzu's They are bred with love and kindness. I will stack that up to any blood line.

ch. parents do not produce all champion pups.. first,, show him to see if you can attain HIS championship.. then if you do.. people with bitches will ask you if they can use your dog for stud services.. remember not to jump the gun,,, show first,, get all appropriate health testing done ( have to wait til age two for most of this) and then think about studding...... you don't want to breed to just any female...since you want a pup you certainly don't want a pup from an unproven female , pup could have health issues etc- ... remember,, just because you like your dog doesn't mean all the pups will be like him- they are part MOM too ( temperament, health, looks etc.) i would suggest that you contact the mini schauzer club of america and research there site and learn all you can before deciding to contribute to pet overpopulation... good luck to you and happy researching- also,, 2 hour drive is really close - lots of times , when looking for a breed you must have the pup shipped

First off if you have a dog to "stud out" you do NOT advertise places like the newspaper and craigslist. These are places that irresponsible people go to get dogs for breeding.

If you stud out a dog you show it first, you get to know the right people, other responsible breeders. You research your pedigree thoroughly..you aren't just breeding your dog you are breeding every single dog in your dogs pedigree. You need to get genetic health testing done (not just simple vet exams). Your dog also needs to be at least 2 years old.
A vet is not necassarily the best source on if someone should breed theri dog or not. I love vets have worked for/with them for over 30 years, however they aren't generally up on breed standards or of genetic issues with in a breed. They also aren't familiar with bloodlines, etc. Just because your vet has suggested it does NOT mean that you should. In order to get proper, correct info and evaluation you need to talk to someone who is very knowledgable of the breed and all taht goes with it.
