That is a good question. And I'm glad to hear that you're not religious as religion are man-made and the root of all evils on the earth. Some will tell you it's money but it's only the love of the money that is bad as some with money do good things with it and others without any money at all spend their entire lives worrying about it and that's just as bad as having too much love for money since that stops them from putting God first as they put the worry of having no money and don't put their trust and faith in God, but I'm drifting off of your subject here so I'll back-track...
Could it be that even though a part of you despises what all has been done in the name of religions, another part of you wants to adhere to the spirit of God itself which tells you that what men are guilty for cannot be blamed on the true God who in due time will put everything back in the order in which they belong and will purify the planet of all the atrocities ever accomplished in his name that had absolutely nothing to do with his will and that if only we have the tiniest bit of faith to give him credit to have enough wisdom, him that is love, wisdom, power and justice personified, yes enough wisdom to know what it is that he had to do by allowing his accuser Satan to rule for a while until he clears his holy name once and for all, then your reward will be such that you will truly know and understand the very things that kings, queens, stars and even angels long to know and peer in... namely the very purpose of your own existence along with all of the people you ever loved even the dead ones who will for sure be resurrected, or brought back to life... It's a sacred secret that he generously reveals to all who sincerely have a good heart and who sometimes even unwittingly search for him. The best way to know if this could be what is happening to you is to compare your own feelings with the fruits of his spirit or active force as described in the book of Galatians 5:21,22 and since you say you aren't religious and may not have a Bible, I will quote them here for you... and they are love, joy, goodness, mildness, faith, peace, kindness, patience and self-control. If you already possess these characteristics, you could be pretty sure that it is God's spirit that is already at work in you. And blessed are you if that is the case for you will come to know God and know already that his very own peace, which excels all thoughts, will be yours forever.

Simple questions expressed in the religious spiritual ethical modes can have complex foundations and implications. They can be enjoyable mental puzzles, requiring speculation and shifts of perspective and worldview - and creative thinking is FUN.

Just because you don't have a strong religious belief, doesn't mean you are oblivous to everyone else's spiritual beliefs and hey if you are helping others, don't worry yourself too much!
