You know what you should do? Stop researching, go out and find a chemist (or drug store...I dunno what they would call it in your country), and find a nail polish there specifically for nail biting. When you put it on, it's clear and un-noticable. But when you go to bite your nails...BAM! The taste is awful. It tastes like house paint mixed with banana. VERY DISGUSTING. You can only taste it though, not smell it, so don't worry about the scent making you sick. That helps SO MUCH with nail biting. Use it until you stop completly, trust me, it works. It's non toxic, by the way.

Ok. I had the same problem myself. These are some of the methods I used to stop:

1) Wear gloves.
2) Get yourself a pretty manicure, then they will look so pretty you won't want to bite them.
3) Reward yourself for everyday you don't bite a nail.
4) Next time you reach to bite one, just imagine full, pretty, manicured nails.
5) Always keep a nail file and clippers handy for an unexpected hangnail.

(I wouldn't try expensive procedures or surgery or whatnot, these tips are better!)

The problem is in your sub conscious. You must bring the habit into your conscious so that you are aware of your habit as to solve it. Wear gloves or put plaster over your nails. When you are going to bite your nails, you will be aware. Say "I no longer bite my nails. I will have beautiful nails from now on.". Say something you don't want (biting nails), and then follow by something you want (beautiful nails). Do this continuously for 21 days to stop any habit.

Ermmm...I've read the other answers and I'm not at all convinced!

I have been a nail biter as long as I can remember. Nothing worked for me, not horrible tasting nail varnishes (got used to the taste) nor not washing hands or thinking of a toilet seat. Biting my nails became a reflex action.

I got nail extensions done. They look glam and great with fancy nail art (unless you're a boy, get short and simple natural look) and they are too hard to bite off :-)))

Go ahead, try it, worked for me :-)

Take care

I don't know I have bitten my nails all of my life. I know that if I am working with something nasty, like raw fish or something, I will not bite my nails. I was going to suggest using some chemical, but you have already trying that. I do not know. You may try wearing gloves. You can find some stylish looking gloves.

Dip your fingernails in finger nail polish remover a few times a day and it'll help you quit because the taste is horrible!!! Worked for me!

A golf club. Give it to someone else to smash all your teeth out and hey presto, no more nail biting!

Or you might just want to try chewing gum and a little self-conditioning. Try to be aware of situations where you do it and think of something else to do with you hands - you probably aren't aware that you're doing it so that's the first thing to concentrate on.

Don't wash your hands after going to the toilet...this always works !

Failing that .....get some Hypnotherapy....I am a Hypnotherapist , and it is something we often treat....successfully......but I am in the Uk . Check one out closer to home !

Also take note of the times and places when you bite your nails......and change your routine(s)......being aware of where and when you do it....can prepare you to help yourself to stop !

Have some celery on hand to chew instead.....or some other low calorie treat !
