Pure ceramic is the best (not just ceramic coated). You'll spend $100-130 on the iron (so if you go cheap, you'll get cheap).
You should always use a protective product on your hair prior to using the iron. One of the best (if not the best) products to use is BioSilk silk therapy. It's about $30 but you only need to use about a quarter size in the palm of your hand. Rub gently and then run through your hair (paying close attention to the ends of your hair)

Heat Styling will damage your hair, so don't use it too much. Ceramic works pretty well, just remember to use a protective product before you straighten your hair... and try not to do it too often.
Since you're asking about straighteners, I would assume you have wavy or curly hair... Try working WITH your natural hair... I'm sure its beautiful. Love it, and take care of it :-)
