I can't look people straight in the eye for more than a few seconds even if I'm talking to them. For cases like an interview I have no choice and summon my strength and do it just a bit longer. Is this a common thing, does anyone else have this problem? Can I fix this?

Don't sweat it! It's not comfortable looking at people straight in the eye. You know it's important and you CAN do it. That is the most important thing. You can work on it by looking each person in the eye a bit longer than it feels comfortable. You'll be surprised, they'll look away first. Score for you.

There are many conditions which may involve a difficulty making or maintaining eye contact with others. Many people with autistic spectrum disorders simply don't make eye contact, often not realising that it is a significant part of social interaction. Some people with anxiety traits avoid making eye contact as it can sometimes be a trigger that makes them more anxious. Some people simply haven't learned it as a social skill in childhood and now feel uncomfortable making eye contact.

Which aspect of eye contact bothers you? Can you make eye contact when saying hello and then feel that you must look away? Do you feel worried, anxious or sick if you maintain eye contact? You might need to figure out which aspect of eye contact bothers you.

Making eye contact is a social skill that is taught in social skills programs and many corporate/deportment-style courses. It's definitely something you can learn to do, but to do so comfortably you might benefit from talking to someone about why it's a problem for you.

This is quite common and, don't think about it when you go for an interview.
Get used to looking at the bridge of their nose, the middle area between the eyes, don't connect with the eyes directly. You'll see how easy this is after awhile.

You can fix this, slowly practice on good friends, it is a bit of a weird thing though hey?, some people respect you more if you look at them when you talk to them, and when you tallking to girls its hard not to stare right into their eyes don't you think?. You'll be fine I'm a bit like that if I'm stoned or something. lol. just practice on girls or best friends, but on that same note, know one likes to be stared at too much. ha ha. lol. Life's so hard sometimes.

I have Asperger's Syndrome and looking directly at people in the eyes makes me nervous. I learned from a book to imagene a triangle in between the eyes and up to the top of the nose to look at.

mostly shy people have this difficulty. You must have the intention to overcome this. It is difficult in the beginning but as the saying goes... "practice makes perfect".
SINCERITY is evident when you look at the person in the eye when you talk to him or her.
YOU CAN DO IT. GO FOR IT!

yes this is common.

try looking in between their eyes.

most people i think will find it wierd to spend a whole conversation gazing into eachother eyes!

i usually finish each point/sentence with eye contact to show sincerity.

Used to have that problem. Have to become more confident in yourself. Or have a friend that will break you of that habit. My friend wouldn't let me break eye contact with him. Cured me pretty quickly.
