People do not want to face the harsh reality of their lives. People turn to alcohol or drugs because it provides a temporary escape from reality and sometimes, with chronic usage, a permanent escape from the real world. People have a hard time dealing with the day to day sometimes when things get tough.

I have no clue, but when things go bad for me I usually just get a little depressed or try and shake it off by doing something that makes me feel good(like listening to music, writing poetry, & or designing).

People who succumb to drugs, in the end(mostly) fail miserably. I feel sad for them.

Just that they are in such a rut that they think things can not be any worse. Plus the society is geared towards alcohol reliance

I'm not sure because i'm only 9....but here is my personal opinion. I believe that people do it because they have issues in life and need to concor it. I think that it numbs the pain and it makes them forget. I would never do it and neither should you. Have a nice life and God Bless You.

because people make such a big deal about the issue, and of how people do turn to them in there time of depression, that they think its just the normal thing to do when your down.

essencially escapism.

mind altering substances allow us to enter into an alter-reality and avoid the things troubling us.

its not until we step up and deal with the problem that we make any progress

It's a solace. . .they make the person enter a fake euphoria (a feeling a good being) and it just relaxes them. . .it's a sorry excuse for an escape to me
