Remember when Felix Trinidad came out of retirement and handpicked Ricardo Mayorga, and looked liked Superman in beating him, then got taken to school in his very next fight against Winky Wright. Will Oscar suffer the same fate against Mayweather? He followed the same trail as Trinidad did, hand picking Mayorga, looked devestating in beating him, and now is going up against a master boxer and defender in Floyd, just as Trinidad did in facing Winky. Will Oscar suffer the same fate as Tito? Are we putting too much stock in Oscar's victory over the limited Mayorga?

Excellent point and a great analysis. There are some stunning similarities there. But the one difference in my opinion is that Oscar is not as one-dimensional as Tito was. He's more capable of adjusting to what Floyd may throw at him, where as Tito had no answer for Winky because he really only fights one way. He had no plan b for Winky just in case he couldn't blow him away early, and Winky dominated the fight. Oscar has more tools to work with and can do something different if one thing is not working for him against Floyd. Great question though Breeze!

Good question, but it has nothing to do
with the Mayweather/De La Hoya fight
Whoever wins or loses, it should be a
good fight. they both knew Mayorga
was a chump, and they could easily
win the fight. Winky was to much fighter
for Trinidad, but the Floyd/Oscar fight
both have a good chance of winning.

I don't think it's the same situation. De La Hoya has never really lost a step. He only looked bad against Sturm and Hopkins because they were physically much bigger than him. He was fighting in divisions where he had no power.

Floyd is in the same situation, he couldn't knockout Baldomir or Judah in the Welterweight Division, what makes anyone think he will have any pop in the Light Middleweight Division?

Surely if Castillo could have convinced all the HBO commentators that he beat Floyd the first time, De La Hoya stands a better chance than one may think.

I got to agree with the first three answers, excellent comparison, Oscar could very well get schooled by Floyd. I don't think Floyd is as defensively oriented as Wink, and he's a lot smaller then Wink, but the Mayoraga parallel made me think you might be on to something. Great question.
