In 2006 I forgot to send in my tax information to the government for a refund. I was told by someone that you legally only are required to file once every three years before you get in trouble. I already filed my taxes this year for 2006. How can I file my 2005 taxes?

If you've had enough income, you are legally required to file a tax return every year. You can go to www.irs.gov and download whatever forms you need to fill out and file your 2005 taxes. It is past the deadline for e-filing the 2005 taxes, so you will have to paper file your return. If you owe the IRS money you will also have to pay penalties and/or interest. If you're owed money they will send you a check.

You are required to file EVERY year by the deadline if you have enough income to be required to file. But if you file late, you can still get your refund as long as you file within three years from the original deadline, and won't pay a penalty if you have a refund coming.

As to being legally required to file only every three years before you get in trouble, that person is dead WRONG.

As noted, you need to file every year that your income is above the threshold for you to file.

A commercial preparer can do the 2005 return. You will need to mail the return in. It will take several weeks for the refund to be sent to you.

You could also use a 2005 software package and print out the return and mail it in.

If you want to do the return manually, the necessary forms are at the site irs.gov.

First rule of nature; never, never, never listen to this mysterious "THEY" unless they give you a signed blank check to cover the expenses of what their advice will cost you if you follow it. Second; contact your 2005 employer if you can't find the copy of your W-2 for 05 you received; then go online to IRS.GOV; go to forms; past years; pull up 2005 and download that which you need; fill it out and send it in. I believe the standard penalty for late filing is $ 100.00 if you have a refund due you.
