How come does the human stomach not digest itself?

Actually, sometimes it tries to. You hear of people with ulcers, they suffer from the stomach acid burning holes in the lining of the stomach.
The stomach is made to resist the affects of the acid, but when lack of proper diet and exercise come into play, along with heredity, the stomach actually does try to eat itself...and it doesnt feel very good either.
