The vet wouldn't have said 'its not fleas' then just let you walk out; they would have wanted to find out why she is biting at her skin, losing fur and scratching.
It could be mange, vets would be concerned about that because it can spread to people. You can see ticks. One type looks like a green peas stuck on the animal. The vet would have given you a treatment for fleas and ticks, its all in one.

Get the cat back to the vets and get this properly looked at.

If the vet saw the cat and told you no fleas.. Did he also tell you that the cat had ticks?? I am pretty sure that a vet would be able to diagnose ticks.. Why wouldn't you ask the vet for something for the ticks.. Might want to get the ticks off the cat .. You were at the vet, why didn't you get him to treat for ticks while you were there?

#1-make sure to use a flea comb all over your cat, and then check by hand for any out of the ordinary lumps & bumps, & follow the 'removal' instructions in the other posts. if you ever find a tick, and it corresponds to a time where the cat is feeling ill, make SURE you get it checked by a vet. I had Lyme disease, it is NOT FUN.
#2-where are they scratching and biting? it can sometimes be related to a skin rash on that area. if the hair loss is on its head, i switched from plastic food bowls and it made an immediate difference.
#3-you may want to ask for a mange or other skin related issues test

You would know if they're ticks - these are very visible creatures, sort of greyish colour that appear as large (like a centimetre round) motionless lumps attached to your cat! You can remove them, but I wouldn't advise doing it yourself, as it's easy to leave the mouth parts behind which can cause infection.

I would suggest using Frontline (veterinary treament) as this treats fleas and ticks. Even if the vet reckons she hasn'tgot fleas, you should be using flea treatment regularly to prevent this.

Did your vet suggest what else it could be, or did he just say 'not fleas' and push you out the door? Ask what else it could be, and get an appropriate treatment from your vet. I wouldn't suggest any pet shop preparations, they're mostly just money-spinning rubbish that doesn't work.

If it was ticks, you would be able to see them if you parted her fur. they can get quite big and you can get special tick remover levers (I can't remember what they are called).
I'm surprised to hear that your vet hasn't told you what is wrong with your cat, but I would recommend seeing your vet again. I don't think your cat has ticks.

that's when you take a lighter and hold it next to/ or against the butt of the tick. It will let go and fall off, then you smoosh it. I have several cats and one got a tick on his forehead and I did that. With no need for medicine. Trust me, you would know if you'r cats had ticks, so would the vet.

advantage or frontline flea treatments also do ticks, check the pakaging first because there are diffrent types. you can also remove ticks by burning them off with a cigarette, never try to pull them out or you will leave the head inside your cat. make sure its not an allergy.

LOSING FUR SOUNDS LIKE MANGE!
I'm surprised the doc didn't check for mange, mange can only be seen under a microscope.

Mange is can be easily treated, so take her back to the vet asap !!!

Ticks get the blood in the cat, and they get bigger, so then you would be able to see them.
