The passage you are referring to is in I Tim. not, II Tim. NASB renders it "O timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and emply chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called 'knowledge'--which some have professed and thus gone astray from the faith. Grace be with you." From the rest of the chapter in which it is found, I believe he's talking about false doctrines more than what we would assoicate with modern scientific declarations, but nowadays, I'd say it would fit. Paul is warning Timothy not to listen to any teachings that do not conform to the truth of God as he received it from the Apostles and God's word. If it doesn't conform to God's word, just don't listen.

Southndaysi other Bibles do have the word science,
eg, this is what the Third Millennium Bible says;
1 Timothy 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science, falsely so called, 21 which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

Well, since there is no 2 Timothy 1:20-21, and the quote you gave appears nowhere in the Bible, I'm guessing either you are pulling our legs, or you are trying to remember Colossians 2:8
"See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ."
Science is only the means to discover how God did it. The Bible neither forbids science or mentions it. Philosophy, on the other hand, is not the study, but the constant philosophizing about everything and refusing God's truth.

Back in Timothy's day, science was quackery. Even two hundred years ago, doctors believed blood-letting and leeches could cure illnesses.
There are certainly things today that science can't explain, but humankind has made great progress in the scientific field and should continue to strive to do so.
You don't have to shun science to please God. He made us so that we could understand and grow in this world. Above all, don't be afraid to have an open mind. No scientist is going to make you stop believing in God if your faith is strong. Many scientists actually do believe in Him, no matter what your preacher tells you. He just wants to keep you ignorant so that you'll keep filling up his collection plate.

It says "science FALSLEY so called is vain babbling. i.e. false science is vain babbling. (Like the lunacy of evolution, which denies the physical evidence and has to even contradict the very laws of science to support its' claims).
Also, the greek word translated "science" is "gnosis"- which simply means knowledge. In the time the book was written, they did not have what we would call science today- the word simply means "knowledge" and "to know" and the Apostle Paul most likely was refering to Greek philosophy and Gnosticism when he wrote to avoid the babblings of "gnosis, so called".
