Third Edition of The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, published in 1992: “An opinion or a doctrine at variance with established religious beliefs, especially dissension from or denial of Roman Catholic dogma by a professed believer or baptized church member.”
I, like Meg; believe that many of the American Bishops and many American Catholics are in schism or heresy.
Doubt what I say?
One example, and ONLY ONE! How about about the many polls that say that "such and such" a percentage of Catholics are 'pro-choice'. As Pope John Paul II said it is a "Culture of Death", and is a heresy.
It is the persistent pervasive denial of the sacredness of human life. The denial of the sacredness of human life has been manifested in the promotion of abortion-on-demand, in the tolerance of infanticide, in the legalization of euthanasia, in the legalization of assisted-suicide, in the promotion of human cloning, in the promotion of fetal experimentation.
A foretaste of what was to come the great Pius the Xth wrote alot about this very thing:
Pascendi Dominici Gregis (1907) by St. Pope Pius X http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/pius_x/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-x_enc_19070908_pascendi-dominici-gregis_en.html
and the Lamentabili Sane http://www.papalencyclicals.net/Pius10/p10lamen.htm(better known as the Syllabus of Errors by same Pope.)
Blessings!

If you listen to my father, it is a sure thing.
As for me, I don't see it coming any time soon. I don't see the US Bishops going for it en masse, and without that support, it would be a sad little faction. I think both sides (Vatican and USA) need to move a bit more back to the center. A lot of Rome's theology either needs to be reworded or looked at from a fresh point of view. At the same time, many American Catholics need to learn a little bit about the idea of COMMITTING to something.

The reason these "squeaky wheels" get noticed is because their misguided value system is socially acceptable according to secular humanists.
Amost by definition, secular humanists cannot stand the moral values held firm by Church leaders and devout laity. That is why, when they locate a loud Catholic dissenter, they make great use of them as propaganda.
Seek and ye shall find devout Catholics. Find some. They're a good crowd to hang with.

I think that slowly we are diverging from ancient Rome and the teachings of the Pope. Eventually we will have a totally americanized catholicism.
On another topic, I tried to get my Lutheran boyfriend to pray to Mary tonight, that was a failed attempt. I don't even consider myself a devoted catholic but that was very disappointing to me. I feel my religious beliefs are very bizarre- I don't go to church more than once 3-4 times a year but I take great offense to those who don't believe in the catholic faith.

I think many American "Catholics" have already split from Rome through heresy and schism (both of which result in automatic excommunication).

Reunification with the Orthodox Church replaced into the late Pope John Paul's choose. however the Orthodox Church isn't fascinated; they seem to have a inferiority complicated whilst it incorporates the Catholic Church, form of like sibling rivalry.

The greatest majority of American Catholics will never split from the mainstream Catholic Church.
A few very small groups have split and probably will continue to break off as they believe that the mainstream Catholic Church is either:
+ Too conservative and needs to change faster
+ Too liberal and needs to change back to the old ways
With love in Christ.
