Different things work at different times for different people for different reasons. The best one is the one that does more good than harm.. and the only way to know is to try different combinations at different levels for extended periods of time.
There are probably 50 or so different medications that are approved for use in the spectrum of mental illness .. and each of them has several suggested therapudic dosage levels that are all specific to the individual.
It is all an educated guess when it comes to medications. An open relationship with the prescribing doctor is the essential part of solving the riddle. I have personally tried 20 or so different medication combinations and dosages over the past few years. But the majority of the fight towards getting the illness under control seems to be taking accountability for the things I can control.. Things like diet, exersize, limiting my own exposure to stressful situations. Planning things ahead of time and sticking to the plan. And being more aware of my mental state of mind, by figuring out what I think I need most .. sometimes I need structure, and sometimes I need a distraction.
There is no single, simple answer to your question. Millions of us wish there was.
Good Luck :)

There is a lot of great things out there, but one that I wouldn't recommend is Seroquel. It makes you SO tired and sluggish. If you want it to help as a mood stabelizer you need around 200 mg or something like that. I was only on 25 and it made me sleep for hours on end. I couldn't get up in the morning and was tired all day. But then again everybody's different. Talk to your doctor/psyciatrist and they will advise you the best medication that will suit your needs. I heard that Depakote is pretty good. Good luck! It's great to see that you are getting some help... it makes me mad when people complain about their mental problems and don't take medication!

There is no "best" drug. Everyone reacts differently. My husband who is Bi-Polar takes a combination of 3 different drugs, it tooks years to finally get his meds right for him. Just talk to your doctor and be open and honest. It can be a long a difficult journey.

Hang in there and good luck.

I have been suffering from bi polar for the last 15 years. My doctor has put me on several medications but the latest one i'm on (which i've been on for the past 9 months) is the best one so far. It's called efexor-xr and it comes in different mg's. Talk to your doctor and see what is right for you.
Please email me if you have further questions

As others have said, there is no one answer to your question because each person is different. Bipolar disorder is difficult to treat and you need expert help to find the right treatment for you.

There's a webpage here which discusses various treatments and I hope this might help you.

Good luck!

It totally depends on the person.

Try bipolarworld.net and click on Dr. Phelp's stuff. He goes thru it all in great detail.

I take lamictal, it helps some. It helps more with depression than the other mood stabilizers, I have read. A lot of people have to take more than one mood stabilizer.

They give different drugs..it depends upon the person and how they react to the meds and if the meds are helpful to them...You might have one thing to treat depression and another drug to help bring down the mania...
