No nothing artificial and hard down there.(chaffing) cycling knicks and/or cycling undies only.

The occasion male cyclist might throw in a pair of socks or other padding if they feel inadequate.

No cup, not ever. Not only would that be painfull after a short period of time (unless you're into that sort of thing, not that there's anything wrong with that), but it would look utterly ridiculous. I know some guys that have ridden with compression shorts, but they don't really seem to provide any benefit.

My crotch area is pretty tolerant, and I can ride pretty much any cycling short with a chamois, but I know alot of guys who have problems with seams and cut in certain brands.

The purposes of a well designed cycling short are:
keep the goods up and out of the way
provide some padding/shock absorption
wick away sweat to keep things dry (helps prevent chaffing)
let the legs slide smoothly over the saddle (prevent chaffing)

Don't be afraid to spend a few dollars on a quality pair of shorts. A good pair will last more than ten years unless you ride through alot of mud often. Spending 50-60 bucks now is like spending 5-6 dollars a year for ten years. It's well worth it.

Nope, most bike riders wear only a pair of cycling shorts. Cycling shorts have a pad built into them to provide some dampening of road shock as well as a "smooth" surface for the skin. You will see some expensive shorts (100's) of dollars that have special seamless pads or veirous materials to increase comfort.

Definitely not! A good pair of cycling shorts is all you should wear, be they lycra or baggies with an insert. Anything else will be extremely uncomfortable. Oh, and wash them after every ride!

The purpose of cycling shorts is to prevent chafing, wick sweat and support muscles.

Wearing a hard plastic cup in your crotch does none of these, so no. You don't sit on your cojones anyway, you sit on your 'taint.
