Low class - get real. The average income is less than $35,000

Even in NYC you'd be in reasonably good shape compared with the rest of the nation. In most other cities except the most expensive ones, you'd be in GREAT shape.

Well, to most people it would seem to be pretty good shape, but it depends on where you live in the country & other factors. $170k/year in a high cost-of-living area (either coast in a major area such as Manhattan, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Beverly Hills, etc) with a family of 4 or 5 would still be a stretch.

How many people are in your family?
What is the cost of living index for your area?
Monthly outflow of money (bills, food, etc)?

Little hard to answer your question without knowing the above.
