If I plant a few trees in a space without trees, a new ecosystem will get started there.

If I put the trees to get started, then nature will take care of the rest. Once some trees are there, then birds and insects come. Different plants begin to grow in the shaded area beneath the trees. More and more kinds of living things move into the area, and the trees themselves will reproduce. If we provide a little start, then nature will take over.

I've never heard that saying before, but it sounds like it is saying, if you were to plant trees outside or symbolically speaking, are open or leave things open, other things are capable (good or bad) of coming in and thriving or having an effect, wheras if you cover it up as a house covers things they are being closed off from things outside of the "house" so to say. I might be wrong though.
