I used to take ecstasy regularly and in excess. Have stopped for 3 years. I do not drink, eat faty foods and I am a Vegan. I did a liver functions test the other day and my ALT is 57. The doctor says that there is hepatocellular damage. Is this terminal? or will the liver cells regenerate? Is this reading of 57 serious or only minor? Will it lead to death? Your serious answers or personal similar experiences will be highly appreciated.

Maybe it's meaningful, but levels under 120 aren't distinctly abnormal and should be repeated after a 12-14 hour fast before any conclusions are drawn..If the level really is elevated, then further blood tests will better determine why, and you could even eventually need a needle biopsy of the liver to answer your questions. But levels in the 50's and 60's are often spurious or transient and meaningless, so don't go picking out your casket just yet!

ALT rise indicates hepatocellular damage, but 57 is a figure which is a good warning . It`s not terminal at all. Liver is the most complex laboratory in human body. Liver tolerates a lot of insult like a mother . But you vexed your liver enough. Your doctor will advise you Vitamins A, D, E and K. He will advise you some choline containing liver tonics and a high carbohydrate and low fat diet .. And of course no drugs. Within six weeks liver recovers totally and ALT should come down.

ALT normal values for males are between 10 to 50 i.u./l. depending on the lab., so a 57 is not to worry about. an elevation of alt is result of any kind of liver inflammation but this result doesn´t is a diagnosis of anything at all without a clinical history and physical examination, talk to your doctor about it. good luck
