I am going to be selling my home soon. When you are shopping for homes, do you pay a lot of attention to the colors of the walls, or do you figure that you will be painting them your own colors anyway? The reason I ask, my husband wants to repaint the entire house before we sell, and I think it is fine. The kitchen is a little dark, a taupe color, and our bedroom is an army green color. Should we repaint in lighter colors??

The key to selling your house is to paint it neutral colors because they are more appealing to home buyers and they are warm and create a homey enviroment

If choosing a real estate agent to represent you, ask for some suggested lighter colors that are preferred for homes in your area. Freshly painted walls can only make the home look nicer. This is true. We owned a home a long time ago and were getting it ready to turn over to rental agency. The guy was so impressed that he wanted to know if we wanted to sell the home instead. We just wanted a better chance of getting the home rented while we were unavailable to live in it.

You state that the kitchen is a little dark and the walls are army green, which seems dark to me. Darkness is a turn-off and makes a room look smaller. Personally, I'd go with lighter neutral colors and add color with accessories.

Neutral, lighter colors are suggested by realtors. Personally I prefer a home that is move-in condition and if the walls are super bright or an odd color that means I have to consider time and money painting.

I personally look past the colors on the wall, they don't matter to me

Neutrals are good for selling.Paint never sold a house. You should assume the purchaser will put their own colors on to match their furniture and tastes.
Make sure the walls are at least clean and in good repair, and let them do their own thing. They will anyway.

Yes. Appearence is everything. Like the others said neutral colors and if you're still living in the house then cleanliness and your decorating are extremely important.

paint all a light color, get your pictures off the walls, and clear the mess out... do not change the carpet, if you like allow an allowance for them to choose their own...

When I look at a home to buy I look at the walls for cleanliness and if it is bright. The structure is important.
