It means people hear what they want to hear, they tune out what they don't. They can hear it, but do not listen.

It's more selective listening than hearing. It's when people only hear the bits they want to and ignore the rest.

Selective hearing is a practice in which a person hears only what they want to hear. Usually a person who practices selective hearing has no problems with his/her hearing. Although my nephew is hearing impaired, and he does this quite frequently.

Selective hearing happens when a person only registers hearing or will only give attention to what he or she wants to hear. The person will completely ignore and claim to have not heard anything the person finds negative, offensive, insulting, critical, etc.

I think my dad has it. He acts like he can't hear you when you are talking to him face to face--keeps saying huh??. However, I can be out in the other room and whisper something to someone, and he can hear it. That is selective hearing--only hearing what you want to.

Not sure how to explain it neurochemically but from a behavioral standpoint, it is the act of hearing and responding to what you want to hear while ignoring anything else. Children often have selective hearing...when its time to do the dishes or brush their teeth for bed, they're suddenly deaf.

Well, basically you are selective of what you hear, deciding mostly to listen to positive things and ignoring the portions which are more negative.

When you act like you don't hear but you actually hear it all. And only answer when you want too. ALot of kids do it especially when they don't want to do something

Its when your husband can clearly hear you say "Lets make love." but has a hearing problem when you tell him the trash needs taking out.
