"Word of the day" calendars or emails/newsletters are always an option, but be sure to check out the material beforehand. Sometimes those types of aids have "crazy" words that are not typically in common use.
Reading is definitely an option, depending on the time you have to dedicate. If you don't have a lot of time to read, try listening to a bit of talk radio or NPR (National Public Radio) during your commute. If none of those stations interest you, try visiting the library to check on their selection of audiobooks (Compact Discs are quickly replacing cassette tapes on their shelves!)

Reading is great tool for improving all of your language skills. Just keep challenging yourself a bit more every couple of weeks or so.

Reading. It almost does not matter what you read, Stephen King, Charles Dickens, JRR Tolkein, Richard Dawkins, Carl Sagan, JK Rowling, as long as you do not read only the one author.

Everyday, check www.dictionary.com, www.nytimes.com, and www.webster.com for their "Words of the Day". It's easier than scouring the dictionary and fun to see if you can use them in conversation. Good luck gettin' smarter!
