Let me reiterate, 1% of the American people, fight and bleed for the freedoms of the other 99%, what does that mean to you?

It means that many people who are eligible to be in the military do not consider the service as a career. "They do not get it" is the most fitting phrase I can think to describe the populace. Neither does the military. The rapid rotation of troops, on their third and fourth tour through Iraq and Afghanistan, some in Africa it is unreasonable for families. For the troop that has trained and always maintained a degree of readiness he/she wants a chance to use their skills in combat. Unfortunately, what the 99% of Americans see is how the soilder looses his/her dignity to get the follow through help they need once injured and off the battlefield for good. Many of us know this has gone on for decades and the "Walter Reed Hospitals" have long since failed us. I do not agree with this aspect of the service as is the case for many, but to your question, Americans from the greatest of us including the current President, to the humblest of us, "Jody" have lost the art of service to the country. All chiefs, few infantry men.

1% would be 3,000,000 people only if you consider illegals as Americans. I personally don't. Let's say you're right; 1% of Americans do currently serve in the US Armed Forces. That does NOT mean that 99% have never fought and bled for our freedom, because that 99% would include veterans. Interpreted this way, your statement has a flawed conclusion.

You may intend your statement to mean that at this distinct moment in time, 1% serve and fight for their freedom and also the freedom of the other 99%. Implied in this statement is that the other 99% do nothing to ensure their freedom. If that's what you mean, what makes this moment in time any more or less important than other moments in time? What we are today in this great USA is based on what happened in the past. In this scenario it wouldn't matter if someone served in the past; what only counts is now. This is completely unfair to those who fought and bled before you. Also, since no one is in the military from the day they are born, everyone has been in that 99% at one time or another. Therefore, your conclusion interpreted this way has no real meaning either.

The only logical meaning is the one that Fast Eddie B has already stated - that 1% of Americans serve in the US Armed Forces. I will add that no single conclusion can be drawn about the other 99%.

I do thank all those who have served, including many from my family. I tried to enlist and was medically rejected. So I did the next best thing by enabling someone else to serve for over 20 years and by going well above and beyond what I was required to do in that role.

It means that only 1% of the US population is brave enough to fight for and protect the freedoms of the other 99% of the US population to abuse. My boyfriend serves in the Armed Forces, and I support everything that he does for our country. I would have joined myself, but he asked me to go to college and get a degree instead, so thats what I am doing.

It means 1 out of every 100 Americans are trained to fight. So what are the other 99 people doing?

There are many, many Americans that have served in the past. Are you including them in the 99% that aren't serving. There are many prior servicemen from WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War and all the times in between the wars that are still with us, don't forget them. Rethink your math, son.

My brother is in the 1% now, and he is serving in Iraq. I am a U.S. Army Vet. Unfortunately alot of the young people in this country don't like to work hard or give up partying on weekends to serve in the military. Most of them have never learned about their forefathers or what it means to give up part of yourself for your country. Its a sad thing.

I thank you and every other military personnel person. I thank you for fighting for us americans. I'm enlisting in the air force. and will soon be apart of that 1%.. and it just stuns me and sickens me how anyone can sit there and say that they don't support the troops.. I'm not saying anyone on here said anything like that.. but in previous questions that I've answered about people not supporting the troops. so, I thank you for everything you do..

It means that 95% (taking in the account of those who served in the past and their IMMIDATE family) have NO CLUE what honor, pride, or bravery for their nation is about. Interesting how quickly people think they have a right to know something, when truly they do not know anything about the subject. But that is why brave men and women have, and continue to die for their rights. God Bless, thank you for your service, and Semper Fi.
