Send a personal check if you get the original back. If it is posted incorrectly by the IRS to another taxpayer's account you must have a legible copy of the back of the check to find the information on how it was posted. Years ago a client of mine lost $5000 when the IRS posted it wrong and the back of copy of the cashed check was too fuzzy for the IRS to track it. She lost the money. You might need the original paid check.

If your wife has been using cashiers checks to pay the mortgage then each cashier check has a receipt. Using the receipt, check with your bank and verify the checks have been cash and by whom. If in fact they were all cashed by your mortgage company then you need to raise hell. Didn't your mortgage company call after the first payment wasn't paid? Not to mention the second ot third? Something dosen't sound right.
