It is safe but I hate to hear of a first time mother being induced. If you pass a stress test and the baby has plenty of amniotic fluid, I'd ask to go another week. Inducing labor makes the pain of labor more intense. The contractions come on "all of a sudden" and you don't get a chance to get used to the pain. I hope you're ok with an epidural because you'll be begging for one! If you were a second time mom, you'd know what to expect and be better able to handle the pain...not to mention labor is generally faster with the second and subsequent births. I'm sure your doctor knows what he's doing but it doesn;t hurt to ask if you can hold off a few days. If you do get induced, make sure they start with the lowest dose of pitocin to minimize the shock. Good luck!

It depends on what they are using to induce you. Don't let them come near you with a drug called cytotec - it is used for abortions and can cause placental abrubtion or even death - so stay far away. Most docs don't use it anymore but some still do.
You most likely will have them break your water and see if it helps bring on contrax. They will probably also do a pitocin drip - pitocin is a drug that makes your contractions come harder and faster.
They may use something else first called ceravdil or something similar - its basically meant to soften and thin the cervix to allow for your body to continue on it's own.
I was stuck in early labor for over 30 hrs and was only like 1-2 cm dialated and 90% effaced. So they gave me the pitocin and a couple hours later they broke my water. It was very hard and long, but I made it through fine. I tried to go without any drugs, but pitocin makes the contrax come so hard and strong that it makes it difficult (not impossible though) to go med free for pain meds. I ended up getting an epidural around hour 39 and then my DD came out in 3 pushes at hour 41..... she was healthy and beautiful :). There were no sie affects fomr the pitocin or anything - just the epi - my butt was numb for a long time and my whole body was itchy and my back was sore.
Any type of medical intervention/induction can definitely increase your chances of a c section. the doctor won't let you go over 24 hrs with your water broken in most cases, and if there is any fetal or maternal stress it may happen as well.
Good luck - I know what it's like to be late.. DD was 1 week late... torture....lol

ive had labor induced. there is nothin bad about it if thats your concern. just avoid petosin if possible. thats what they use to make u contract more to progress things faster. when the time comes and you re cramping naturally just remember that if they give u petosin then the cramps will be much stronger and more intense. ive had that too an i wouldnt want that for anyone id rather have naturally than take petosin. they will start by puttin somethin on ur cervix to make it soften an thin out thats ok. it will start your labor. but unless medically necessary dont let them give you petosin later cause ur not progressing like they want ya to. only if they say it would endanger the baby unless you took it would i let them give it to me. ive had 5 babies an ive had two natural and 3 with epidural and two were induced. epidural is not so bad as they make it sound. ive had 4 of them. one didnt work cause i waited too late lol. didnt kick in til after he was out so dont wait too late if you decide to go that route. i may be mistaken about the name of the stuff petosin but if u ask nurse about what entreveinous will they use to make contractions come faster it will be that drug that im talkin about. good luck hun. and congratulations. hope my experieinces help you and feel free to email me for more questions.warriorswomanat@yahoo.com

I developed pre-eclampsia with my first pregnancy and was induced 2 days before my official due date. No particular problems - started the pitocin around 8:30 AM, and my healthy daughter arrived just before 5 PM.
I had a natural labour with my son a few years later. It went significantly faster and seemed a lot more intense but the recovery was much easier than with the first one.

its safe but it does put you more at risk for a csection. i had a induced labor and my labor lasted for 44 hours plus 40 mintues of pushing and 101 fever. i almost had to have a csection bc i was so tired after being in labor for 2 days.

I was induced for both of my pregnancies. For my son, my placenta stopped producing enough stuff to feed him, and he was small. And for my daughter she was 2 weeks late. I didn't have any problems with either of them. I didn't have any pain medication or epidural either. It's all in how you go into the event. Mind over matter. If you don't feel comfortable doing it though, tell your Dr and discuss other options with him or her.

My first child was induced. For myself and baby everything went great. There were no concerns or effects on either. Best of luck and don't forget to stop and enjoy the moment. It is very fleeting.

Medicine has to have evidence to back up why docs do what they do. So if there was no evidence that induction is safe or effective, it would not be allowed.
You have the final choice- if you are not comfortable doing it, then don't. The baby will come out eventually.
If you trust your doc, why are you asking people on the internet what to do?

inducing is fine the baby can't stay in there to long that could be dangerous. they just give you a drug that tells you to contact it is like the one your body makes and labor begins your other option is a C section
