I am doing an informal presentation at my school on some research I did last summer at another university. I asked the prof i worked with over the summer for information or ideas for resources to use to add more info to my presentation and he suggested a book that costs over $35. He said he'll purchase it for me, but I'm not sure whether I should just pay for it myself (i am a college student with not much money and it's not a book i'll read many times, but it will be perfect background and is only available by purchase) or if i should accept his offer to purchase it. What do you think? He is really nice and I just can't tell if he is offering to be nice or if he really wants to purchase it for me.

he said to ask for a copy of the book from where it is offerred and he will pay the editor back. i can't tell whether that means he expects to get the book from me when i'm done or if he wants me to keep it.

The way your question is worded, I think he expects you to pay him back. If I am incorrect, then I would not allow him to buy the book for me, unless he actually wants it for his own library.

Well, if he is a mentor figure for you he may want to give you the book as a gift to honor that relationship, which is OK. Your gut feeling on this one is the one you should trust. If you and this professor aren't that close or too well acquainted, or if you aren't sure of his motivation, I would say "no, thanks anyway" and pay for the book myself if I really needed it or just find other sources. You might be able to find it through inter library loan, if it isn't available at your own library. Hope this helps.

Be sincere with him. Ask him if he wants to keep the book after you do the research because you yourself have said you won't be needing it. Ask him it is okay to give him back at least 1/2 the price... Effective Communication is the key to all....

let him purchase the book with the understanding that it is property of the department. make sure to write this on the book upon receipt and to return it with a thank you when you are done.

Take the book. He's probably interested in your education and thrilled you're getting on well ( and knows you're on a tight budget). 35 dollars is chicken feed. It's about £16.00. One bottle of good wine.

He should not offer if he is not willing.

I would use the book and ask him if he would like it back so he can share it with other students.

If your boss did it willingly, thank him, you must learn to accept a kind gesture gracefully.
