Do you think it's better to be mainstreamed, learn sign language at a deaf school, or go with the oral method?

I went to Model Secondary School for the Deaf now I am mainstreamed in a hearing university. I am from a deaf family and let me give you my first hand expierence. I believe that a deaf school is better. When I went to my deaf school I felt like I fitted in with my classmates and I had the independence. Now while at a hearing university I need to have an interpretor with me to communicate with my classmates and teachers and my world is very restricted if it wasn't for the interpretor.

Those that responded obviously no nothing about deaf education. In my experience mainstreamed within a school that has a good amount of deaf students works well. As well as going to a deaf school whether it is residential or day. The oral method works well for some, but not for all. I don't think you should be asking what is the best, but what works for the child. Some students may be mainstreamed with other deaf kids into a public school, will still fail , and will then go to a deaf school. While others are very successful in an oral program. All in all it just depends on the child, and the experiences they have in school. Hope this helps.

I'm not deaf, but my heart has been in deaf education since I was 11 years old (I'm now 25), so I hope you don't mind that I'm answering in here. :)
I just wanted to say that I really think there should be a category specific to deaf education/culture. For me, it's so that I can learn more about things, and get to know people.
Hey, I think I just figured out my next question... ;)

I personaly am not deaf but my father is. His sister went to a Deaf accademy and he went main stream. He has an easier time getting along with people that have hearing, she tends to only want to be around people with hearing disabuilities. She knows more sign language but he is better at reading lips and can communicaite easier. So it just depends on what you think is important.
