Birds are attracted to light, that is why they fly right to a skylight in a building. Leave it for the night, there really isn't anything that can be done until morning.
Open the window and if they can pop the screen out turn off all of the lights in the room and shut the door. Cover the glass part of the window so the bird doesn't fly into the glass. They can gently coax the bird out through the open window with a broom.
If that doesn't work, make the room completely dark, absolutely no light can be in the room. Birds can't see well in the dark. The can GENTLY throw a small light towel or a light shirt over the bird and let it go out the window. If you use something heavy you will hurt the bird.
e-mail me via my profile if neither one of those works I can give you more suggestions.

So why doesn't somebody just catch it and put it out? It's not poison, you know.
My technique is wild but it works. Chase the bird until it gets tired, then corner it and catch it and put it out the door. If it lands high up, use a broom to chase it. When you catch it, make sure the wings are closed so you don't hurt the bird, and besides it is easier that way.
If it is daytime, you can leave the door or windows open and chase it until it flies out.
If it is night, you could just wait until morning; the bird will sleep all night. Except for nocturnal birds, they don't see at all well in the dark.

Birds like to fly towards somewhere with some light. So turn off all the cottage lights and light a lamp outside. Try to scare it with something tall (threaten it, but of course never touch or hurt it like with a broom). It might get flushed out from his perch and towards the light outside...

If it is nighttime there, have them open the front door, turn all the lights in the house off, and turn on a porch light to simulate daylight and the bird will go to it. If it is daytime...leave the front door open and the bird may find it's way out...or try throwing a blanket or towel over it when it lands or get a net and capture it.

they should open all the doors and windows and go outside for awhile and it will go out on its own. more than likely they are probably inside flailing around scaring it to much for it to think how to get outside. i had one that came down my chimney the other day and couldn't go back up and out. i had to open all the doors and windows and open the door to the fireplace and ran like a bat out of hell outside after about ten minutes, it flew out on its own. they can't scare it or it will stay in there forever.
