I am reading Heidelberg Catechism. Do we modern day Christians agree with the following passage:

The almighty and everywhere present power of God ; whereby, as it were by His hand, He upholds and governs heaven, earth, and all creatures ; so that herbs and grass, rain and drought , fruitful and barren years, meat and drink, health and sickness , riches and poverty , yea, and all things come, not by chance, but by His Fatherly hand.

Better to stick with the Bible.
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
(James 1:17)

Not all Christians agree with that passage from the Heidelberg Catechism. Believers who take a strong view of God's sovereignty will certainly agree with it but there are who would not express their belief exactly that way. In his book, The Problem of Pain, C. S. Lewis described this world as a neutral field which, of necessity, allows for free choice (yes, a more Arminian concept -- but not exactly non-Calvinist either) and as a result bad things happen to good people. These bad things, according to Lewis, are not directly done by God even though they are the result of the neutral field God has designed. Lewis said this suffering also serves as a warning flag in man's experience, telling him something is wrong with the world that needs fixing through a savior. Variations of this view tend to be popular today among Christians. These believers will suggest that the world is fallen and broken (Romans 8) and that suffering flows from this. Extreme health and prosperity teachers (borrowing at points from the mind sciences) claim that God gives all pleasant things and the devil causes all unpleasantness. It is for the individual believer, according to them, to use their skills at "believing and confessing" to make unpleasantness go away.

Yeah why not? God is a great guy and can do that and the bible is perfect and the Heidlberg Catechism was pulled from that.

Yes, All things come from God. He does allow some hardships to come our way, especially when we excluded Him from our lives. By doing so we no longer live under His protection and things happen.
