home made stuff your first time will not look "GREAT" but many people have sloppy dreads. I helped a friend and he got many compliments even though they were a bit loose and i had no idea what i was doing, he did eventually cut them out but kept them for at least a year with some regular maintnance.

Use a type of bee's wax, found in the hair care aisle, try a store in a different neighborhood if not in your local supermarket, you know a black neighborhood.

may help to divide into sections first, so you have a plan and don't run out of room or have them all different sizes. Use some wax, twist the section and you may want to use a brush or comb to brush upwards too. Get some wax in there twist em up. they may be loose and you'll have to keep twisting them now and again. You can wash your hair but may want to give them a day or two to set, then don't use conditioner a lot or much at all, also wash every other day or so untill you get a feel for what you can do. Try to get them as tight as possible.

A really good way is to use Paul Mitchell Lab and take pieces of hair and begin twirling it in to the hair it will help hold the dread. it is like twirling twine together. it will begin looking like a rope. just keep taking pieces until the whole head is done!

I've always heard that dreadlocks were formed from not brushing your hair and just twisting it.

Everyone else is saying not to wash it, but I had a neighbor who had dreads and he told me he washed it but didn't brush it.

I would try the not brushing it instead of not washing it. That way it won't be smelly:o)

SIMPLE. You don't comb your hair. But you do wash it! You just allow it to get knotted and tangly (which takes about a year atleast) and you twist it into sections. To wash it, you just run water thru it and shampoo it. it is cool.

Ha ha, just saw a guy with dreadlocks, thought he looked like travolta in that pathetic movie he did a while back.

You have to admit they look pretty ridiculous.

It appears to begin with matted, unwashed hair. But seriously, contact an african american oriented styling salon and ask.
