Repentance comes through the power of the Holy Spirit. I like to think of repentance as a change of mind. When you become a believer in Christ the Holy Spirit will change your heart and mind. Before, you received Christ, the things of God was not on your mind much and you committed sin with little to no remorse. Now that you receive Christ, God becomes number one in your mind and heart, so you seek to please Him. You certainly cannot do this by continuing to sin. We are human, so even if we are Christians we will fall into sin, but when this happens the Holy Spirit will convict us, believe me you can feel it when the Holy Spirit is convicting you. When this happens just pray to God and say you're sorry and say you will try not to do it again, he will forgive you. So the key to repentance toward God and away from sin is the Holy Spirit. If one follows the Spirit, they are under grace and have a repentant heart. So the best thing you can do is follow the Spirit that God gives believers in Jesus name. Do this and you can be sure that He is leading you away from sin and toward God, repentance.

Repentance to Praying for forgivness and promising that you will turn from your sin and turn to God. Promising not to commit that sin or sins again.

Acts 26:20 - But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

2 Corinthians 7:9 - Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.

2 Corinthians 7:10 - For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Repent means to turn away from. So true repentance is a covenant with God that you agree that the particular act you are repenting of is a sin and that thru His strength, you will not return to it.

Most of the above answers are good ones but true repentance means you hate sin as God does, and when you ask forgiveness, your sorry you did wrong in the first place.
We're human and no matter how hard we try, we fall over and over.
The best we can do in his eyes is try not to repeat our mistakes, and ask with humble heart for his loving forgiveness.
Probably the hardest part of this is to forgive yourself!
You must ask for and believe he forgave you, then put it behind you and don't dwell on it any longer.

To repent , you would ask for forgiveness of wrong things you have done, you will feel sorry that you did them you will feel deep regret for your pass, or when ever you committed a sin(did something wrong) confess of your wrong doing, or thinking

If you are asking about being saved, then you would repent your sins , you would confess your sins as you prayed , you would ask God to forgive you of your sins, as a Christian, you would also need to believe in Jesus that he was born from a virgin, lived, healed performed miracles, was crucified, and rose on the 3rd day, and is now in heaven seated at the right hand of God the father.
and you should also end your prays , that you ask what ever you ask for, in Jesus name.

Repentance

Lit., “change of mind.” Gr., me·ta′noi·an.

What true repentance requires.

Repentance involves both mind and heart. The wrongness of the course or act must be recognized, and this requires an acknowledgment that God’s standards and will are righteous. Ignorance or forgetfulness of his will and standards is a barrier to repentance. (2Ki 22:10, 11, 18, 19; Jon 1:1, 2; 4:11; Ro 10:2, 3) For this reason Jehovah mercifully has sent prophets and preachers to call persons to repentance. (Jer 7:13; 25:4-6; Mr 1:14, 15; 6:12; Lu 24:27) By means of the publishing of the good news through the Christian congregation, and particularly from the time of the conversion of Cornelius forward, God has been “telling mankind that they should all everywhere repent.” (Ac 17:22, 23, 29-31; 13:38, 39) God’s Word—whether written or spoken—is the means for ‘persuading’ them, convincing them of the rightness of God’s way and the wrongness of their own ways. (Compare Lu 16:30, 31; 1Co 14:24, 25; Heb 4:12, 13.) God’s law is “perfect, bringing back the soul.”—Ps 19:7.

King David speaks of ‘teaching transgressors God’s ways so that they may turn back to him’ (Ps 51:13), these sinners doubtless being fellow Israelites. Timothy was instructed not to fight when dealing with Christians in the congregations he served, but to ‘instruct with mildness those not favorably disposed’ as God might give them “repentance leading to an accurate knowledge of truth, and they may come back to their proper senses out from the snare of the Devil.” (2Ti 2:23-26) Hence, the call to repentance may be given inside the congregation of God’s people, as well as outside of it.

The person must see that he has sinned against God. (Ps 51:3, 4; Jer 3:25) This may be quite evident where open or direct blasphemy, vocal misuse of God’s name, or worship of other gods, as by use of idol images, is involved. (Ex 20:2-7) But even in what one might consider a “private matter” or something between himself and another human, wrongs committed must be recognized as sins against God, a treating of Jehovah with disrespect. (Compare 2Sa 12:7-14; Ps 51:4; Lu 15:21.) Even wrongs committed in ignorance or by mistake are to be recognized as making one guilty before the Sovereign Ruler, Jehovah God.—Compare Le 5:17-19; Ps 51:5, 6; 119:67; 1Ti 1:13-16.

The work of the prophets was largely one of convincing Israel of its sin (Isa 58:1, 2; Mic 3:8-11), whether this was idolatry (Eze 14:6), injustice, oppression of one’s fellowman (Jer 34:14-16; Isa 1:16, 17), immorality (Jer 5:7-9), or failing to trust in Jehovah God, and, instead, trusting in men and the military might of nations (1Sa 12:19-21; Jer 2:35-37; Ho 12:6; 14:1-3). The message of John the Baptizer and that of Jesus Christ were calls to repentance on the part of the Jews. (Mt 3:1, 2, 7, 8; 4:17) John and Jesus stripped away from the people and their religious leaders the cloak of self-righteousness and of observance of man-made traditions and hypocrisy, exposing the sinful state of the nation.—Lu 3:7, 8; Mt 15:1-9; 23:1-39; Joh 8:31-47; 9:40, 41.

Re means again pent means think (middle English, I believe). It means change your thinking. Regarding sin, it means to change your mind and agree with God. Jesus said repent (change your thinking) and believe the Gospel. As far as practical considerations go, it further means to turn away from and stop doing the wrong thing for which you claim to have had the mind change. If you don't turn away from the sin, it means you have not really agreed that it is wrong.

First we Come to Jesus and Trust in HIS FINISHED WORK!

But then that is POSITIONAL Repentance.

PRACTICAL Repentance is expressed here....

(Psalms 36:9) For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.

AS an example, Do you Prepare your Heart BEFORE each time you Seek the Lord, or Pray, or Spend some time with HIM?

IF NOT, then you have Sinned! HOW you say?

(2Chronicles 12:14) And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD.

IN THY LIGHT, WE SEE LIGHT! Or in HIS WORD, we See LIGHT!

Since I first READ THAT VERSE, I Repented of MY Sin Of OMISSION, and my Sin of COMMISSION!

Now I prepare MY HEART, each time BEFORE I SEEK MY LORD JESUS!

That my sister = = THAT = = IS REAL BIBLICAL REPENTANCE!

REPENTANCE = = is Obeying THE WORD, when HE shows us His TRUTH in His WORD!

Thanks, Roger R.

Admitting you are a sinner.

Telling God how truly sorry for the sin you committed.

By reading Gods word and by being in fellowship with God in prayer.

To belive Jesus cleanses you from sin because He died for you.
