I'm getting married in May and I wanted to include a ceremony with unity candles. However, I don't want tradition "white/ivory" candles. My colors are black and red. Is it ok to use different color candles? I would love to use a 1 black candle and 2 red. Is that allowed? Would that change the meaning of a unity candle?

I would speak to your minister first just to make sure they would allow it. But I see no problem with it. However I've never actually seen a unity candle in colors other than white tones. I'm not sure where you would find them.

Yes you can do anything you want as long as the officiant has no rules against it.

Why not write something new to go with your new color unity candles? Red is the color of life as you light the red candles you can be instructed to think of your passion for one another and for life itself, think of your creativity, and the fire that is your unique spirit. Joining them together in a black candle... To me where white is the exclusion of all color black is the inclusion of all color, so lighting the black candle shows your willingness to embrace all that life has to offer you, the good the bad the average and the spectacular and to do it together as one.

Again to me it doesn't change the 2 become one meaning but it could deepen it.

Happy planning!

You can use unity candles in any color, if your wedding colors are black and red then you should be able to find a candle maker that has them in those colors. There is no meaning change if you change their color, they still mean the same thing. Check Cady's Candles, they have a wide variety of candles and they can even personalize them for you.

I think you don't need to carry your wedding colors to the unity candles. The church is a formal place with traditional ways of doing things. The church might not even allow it. Unity candles are usually elaborately decorated. I have never seen decorated candles in those colors. Stick to the more formal white or ecru.

Of course it totally changes the meaning. White is for purity and candles in churches are white. Black is for evil and red is for passion - both not appropriate.

You are allowed to do what ever you want, it is your wedding, and if those 2 colors mean a sentimental value, then go for it...

The colors don't have any meaning. Use whatever you'd like.
