You have some good answers here, and some bad ones. If you don't know the difference yet, don't worry about it. You will learn.

Rhythm guitarists play the chord changes and supply the structure (framework) of the song. This structure is important so the singer(s) know when to sing and the lead guitar knows when to play! You strum the chords on your axe according to the rhythm structure of the song: quarter notes, straight eighth notes, eighth-note triplets, sixteenth notes, funky, Latin, march or whatever. Of course some complex songs have more than one rhythm pattern or a combination of patterns in the song and you have to change the rhythm accordingly to let the rest of the band know where they are!

As for the sound, you use which ever sound is appropriate to the music at hand! If you are imitating an existing group, go for whatever they use. It is easy enough to change the sound of your guitar on the fly with foot pedals. I think it is better to use your own distinctive sound and stand out from the lead so there is no confusion about the rhythm. While the singer is singing, the lead guitarist can change his sound and accompany the singer or the band just as you do. Then when he starts playing the lead he can change his sound to stand out from the band!

Rhythm guitar plays the chords- for emo, probably power cords. (the three/four lowest strings)-and lead will play the solos. So rhythm for you should have a darker, deep sound that sounds full, while the lead guitar should have a bright sound that only sounds good on the high notes- it won't be played as much. Normally, unless your lead guitarist is amazing- the lead singer plays lead guitar because they don't need a lead guitarist while they're singing, and the rhythm guitarists plays the whole time.

Alright bud. First you should play guitar hero and then play two players with your fellow band members. One guy will play rhythm guitar the other will play bass or lead. Youll get the hang of it.

If your serious buy and amp, a guitar pedal for both guitars then youll need to find a good distortion sound you like. Than one guy should try to play a good rhythm over and over the same thing. The other guy trys to play different stuff along with the first guitarist, like a solo and he will be the lead guitarist. its pretty basic.
