The first responder is right in that the initial diagnosis could be sciatica. There are also a number of things that could cause this too. This could be caused by back problems such as a buldging disk, or herniated disk putting pressure on the nerves in your back.. It could also be from a ruptured disk. You could also have a narrowing of space in which the nerve passes (foraminal stenosis).
I personnaly don't believe in chiropractors. I would like to think that the best medical help you could get is where the problem is eliminated. I don't think anyone has ever gone to a chiropractor for the last time. There is always follow up visits, forever. You might feel better for a while after you visit, but it always gets worse again. He doesn't cure anything, he just messes with a symptom.
You really need a good work-up by a medical doctor, Neurologist, spine specialist. Some of the important questions before anything is done are:
Age,
Weight,
Height,
Posture,
Recent injuries,
Medications, present and past,
Hobbies,
Work,
These are to just get you in the ball park. Then you can start actual testing depending on the question results. There are XRays, MRIs, Cat Scans, CT Myelograms, Diskograph, and dozens of others that I couldn't even begin to spell.
Any thing with the back is potentially serious. Don't take a chance, see a real doctor.

Yes, a chiropractic adjustment could help with the sciatic pain you are experiencing. I also find that a qualified deep tissue massage therapist can greatly help reduce this pain. You'll probably need to get several massages to relieve the pain.
If you have a access to a Jacuzzi it would benefit you to use it several times a week. A moist heating pad applied for twenty minutes and then resting for another twenty minutes, and apply ice pack for ten minutes can help with the pain.
I have enclosed a link where you can find a qualified chiropractor in your area in the USA.
If you have any further questions please let me know,

severe pain in hip going down the leg may be an indication of sciatica - a condition where the sciatic nerve is inflamed.
This may be caused by a misalignment of the hip, in which a chiropractor can help.
Sciatica can also be caused by tension in the Piriformis muscle (it goes from the sacrum across your butt to the outside) which then presses on the Sciatic nerve.
In that case, a well-trained massage therapist can work the piriformis and give you relief.
