I don't know if they do this in Canada, but they do in USA: You can often register with shelters or ASPCA/rescue organizations. Then, when they get a pet that meets your preference, they will call you. It is usually a minimal fee to adopt through these groups & you will spare an animal from being put to sleep. It won't have "papers", but who cares? It is a pet, not a house.

I have a Siamese cat and she is a breed of a different kind!!
She is stubborn and refuses to wash her own butt!!
And that meow of hers.. uggg!!!
But, I love her - her name is Simply Irresistible - because she was, at the Pet Store... now, not so much!!!
