I am overweight and starting to work out. We're talking over about 20 lbs. so it's belly fat..ugh. The worst. So anyhow. Should I wear loose or tight clothes to work out in. I'm not asking for what is fashionable. I mean for my body to tighten. Please don't waste my time and yours with stupid remarks.

You need to burn fat. Wearing tight clothes might make you sweat more, but that only affects your body's cooling system - in effect, you're making your self-regulating cooling system work more INefficiently, making you lose more water. That's all it is - water. Not only do you not lose any more fat, it can be dangerous as this is a sign your body is overheating. This could actually make you reduce the amount of energy you expend, to allow your cooling system to "catch up", which will reduce the amount of fat calories you burn.

HOWEVER, there's logic that you will not eat as much if you have tight fitting clothes, as your stomach will not be able to expand as much and you will feel full with the restricted space on less food. But in terms of working out, what really matters is cooling most efficiently so that you can maximize the fat calories burned. Wear loose clothing, preferrably with excellent heat transfer (large holes for air transfer, or something that removes water from the skin).

I prefer loose clothing. It's just more comfortable. You should probably wear something heavy, like a sweat-shirt to promote body heat and sweating. I can only assume you're holding alot of water that is unnecessary.

They've proven 2 things:
1. Wearing tighter clothing while working out helps you get a better workout. Your brain can better control your muscles, etc. People in the study could jump higher for longer, and run faster for longer.

2. Wearing tight clothing actually helps you lose weight, psychologically speaking. People who wore pants one size too small consumed fewer calories than those who wore loose-fitting clothing.

So screw fashion! If you're at the gym, wear something tighter to get a better workout. No one will judge you for it - you'll be working out.

Technically either one will work...from personal experience though I like to use a body hugging material like spandex...because loose clothing can actually limit your range of motion and if you start out in loose clothing it only gets looser as you firm things up...so you'll be buying new outfits often. If you buy a suit with a spandex blend component you will be as free to move as if you are naked and you won't buy a new suit every other week.

You want to be comfortable while you work out and you want to wear something that gives a little when you are stretching. So i would go with loose clothing. that's what i wear. Working out in loose clothes will lead to being able to wear tighter clothes once you lose the baby fat.

Something with good support around your bust and midsection is a good idea. I've found that wearing something that hugs your body compels you to be more conscious of keeping good form. You'll be more likely to hold your stomach in when you're working your muscles and that is to your benefit. You can always throw a T-shirt over if it makes you feel more at ease.
