My mom had a cocker spaniel and she said she was the best dog.

To be honest, I am partial to Rottweilers. I have had one since he was 7 weeks old and he is now 6 years old. He is so amazingly sweet. It would be great for the child and the Rottie to grow up together. That dog would be the child's best friend. If you are looking for an accessory dog, then I would get a Yorkie. The only problem with the Yorkies is that they are very had to house break. (Lots of little dogs are hard to house break). I have seen both Rottie and Yorkies around young children. So I would recommend either one. Happy hunting. Oh, please do a lot of research on the breeder you chose. That will make a world of difference in the health of your puppy.

I know that cocker spaniels are really good dogs, and are gentle with the smaller children.

well, a cocker spaniel or a golden retriever are great family pets.
they are both good with toddlers and kids, and easily trainable.
