I just got out of the navy and went into the navy reserves. There is an old saying, choose your rate choose your fate. As an undesigned seaman you are told you can choose from a lot of rates in the seaman field. Most of the time you are put into something they need you in and most people hate it! Then you are pressured to stay in that rate until you put on Petty officer 3rd class and then your really stuck. So my advice, if you enter the navy as an undesg. seaman and all they do is make you needlegun and paint all day, at the end of the day get out there and check on other rates that look interesting to you and get into it as much knowledge as possible. Get your OJT, let your chain of command this is what you want to do no matter what and don't take no for an answer! Most people in the navy don't care about you, you will have to make it happen. Good luck!

Yikes, Seaman in the apprentice program? In theory you can strike for any of the non-engineering and non-aviation rates. In reality you are going to have to be incredibly motivated to make it out of Deck Department.
Since you'll be spending a lot of time on/near the bridge you might try for Quartermaster or Operations Specialist. Like I said, it's going to be very difficult. You'll be working a regular day as a Deck Seaman and standing at least one watch after/before work. That's a very full day and lost sleep at night. There just won't be much time to study/train for another rate.
You'd have done much, much better as an Airman or Fireman Apprentice.

I am a Boatswains Mate, have been for 18.5 years. Boatswains Mates are the oldest rate in the navy with the oldest traditions, and command the most respect. Just my opinion.

This questions assume that jobs can be ranked. In reality, you must be assessed (ranked) and then associated with a job. There is no best job, only one that you are best for. Study yourself, and then you'll know which job is best - for you.
