If you are American and located in a state with licensed Trader Joe's stores, TJ's 2 Buck Chuck is OK (especially the sauvignon blanc with fish) but TJ's 3 Buck Moe (J. W. Morris brand) is much better for the additional dollar and is made in more varieties. For a rare wine drinker wanting non-challenging but pleasing wines try the merlot or zinfandel for a red and the reisling or dry chenin blanc for a white.

Any variety of Yellowtail or Little Penguin from Australia. Both brands are good but the Aussies aren't all snooty about their wines yet so not expensive.

Any kind of table wine. It's not the best, but it's darn cheap. Honestly...what I do is go to the restaurants, and ask for tastes of things. They're yummy AND free!

Find a good wine shop. One that has a knowledgable staff and a good range of products. If you only want a little now and then buy Spilts (half bottles). We half a good variety of splits in our wine shop.

Go to a tasting. Liquor stores, wineries, and some other places have tastings where you can try different wines. I don't think anybody can tell you what is good because what may be good to one person might be nasty to another.
