Who told you to get a gas/store card?
My personal experience:
When I had absolutely no credit history, at age 20 working part time and not a student, Capital One gave me a $500 unsecured card. True, they don't report your credit limit. However, if you get a cash advance and then repay it the following month that'll have the same effect because when calculating your score it substitutes the highest you've ever owed for the limit.
At age 21, Ford Credit gave me a car loan at a 5% interest rate.
At age 22, Best Buy gave me a $1,700 credit card. (You may consider my credit pretty decent credit by now, which would be why it's so much more than my first card, but it's still a "sub-prime" on my credit report due to low account age.)
At age 23, I applied for an Ikea card and got rejected.
I haven't tried WalMart.

Like the first poster said, Walmart is fairly easy when a person has low scores. Target isn't to hard either.
If your scores are low, you have a better chance of being approved if you apply in store.
For the poster who said Cap One, nah I won't give you a thumbs down on that but.......
to the OP, stay away from Cap One.
Cap One does not report credit limits, only high balances. Because of that, if you receive a card from them, you would only be making your credit worse instead of improving it.
You should also check into getting a secured major card.
Check with your bank or credit union.
Or check with Bank of America, Orchard Bank or HSBC - those three have a card selector to see if you would be approved for a card or not without actually having a report pulled and not creating an inquiry.
IF you do apply for a recommended card, then they will pull a credit report and you will have a hard inquiry.
Keep in mind, even if they tell you that you are recommended for a card, there is still a chance you could be denied.

First things first, the world is plastic and everyone needs to survive. Thanks in part to the existence of credit cards, the world has become a lot more livable and safer – financially speaking. The problem then is in the selection of the credit card offer that is appropriate for you. Basically, the question that needs to be answered is which credit card should you go for in order to buy anything and everything you think you need or may not need.
Believe it or not, it all starts and ends with you. The important thing is that you first know what it is you want as well as where you currently stand. The fact of the matter is that there are a lot of credit cards out there that would fit your personal preference and lifestyle. If you are still in college, there are various student college credit cards you could choose from. One is a Citibank Platinum Dividend college student credit card. Balance transfers are allowed in this particular credit card as well as a cash advance facility.
Also, cash backs are earned in this credit card that is worth two percent on purchases made at stores, gas stations, as well as other basic utilities. This college student credit card allows one to build early on a credit history. Read more about it at: http://www.credit-card-gallery.com/article/146,Know_Which_Credit_Card_Offer_You_Should_Go_For

One of the major players are retail store credit cards. These cards may look attractive, especially if they are offered by a shop where you shop frequently. But there are drawbacks to these cards too. If you are new to store cards, then this article will provide some informative advice.
To attract people to get a card restricted to a single store, the retailer offers lot of discounts or special offers. These can consist of a free gift, or discounts on purchase prices when you use the card. If you buy from the shop frequently, this card can lead to big savings on your necessary goods when you use these cards. Another advantage of store cards is that getting it is quite easy even though your credit history is bad. This allows you to restore your credit history.

i could stay faraway from the mastercard all mutually. it incredibly is ordinary to get into hassle with them. A mastercard is in simple terms genuinely a private loan you're able to take out as you opt for it as much as a definite factor. a stable rule of thumb is that in case you to no longer spend money you have no longer have been given. in case you extremely want a mastercard, i could use it sparingly and pay it off on the instant once you get the bill. That way you do no longer incur any interest and construct your credit status.

Why are you worried about your credit score? Do you know what a credit score is good for? To make it easier for you to go into debt.
What's wrong with paying cash?
The only thing you would need good credit for is buying a house, and you can side-step that to a certain degree by having a good down payment and using a financial institution that does manual underwriting instead of just a fico score to determine what type of risk you may or may not be.
Spend less than you earn and pay cash.

I know I will get a bunch of raised eyebrows on this one - PLEASE no thumbs down - but really, Capital One will give you one, starting out around $200.00. Pay it off each month, or just don't even use it. Cut it up and just have it show up on on your credit report. It is better if you can pay cash, but if you need to build credit that will help you.
