It is the polite thing for a gentleman to do. It is impressive & always appreciated by the ladies because it makes them feel special & important. Unfortunatelly, there are not that many gentlemen left. Are you one of them?

Manners are important- but sometimes, formality can be too much of a good thing or appear out of place. Standing for a lady would be okay at a black-tie, jackets-required fancy restaurant. Standing is also a good idea when the other party- male or female- is a person of importance. But in a casual setting- like at a diner, Ruby Tuesday's, or with everyday buddies- it might appear over the top or odd. In other words, the etiquette should match the setting.

Yes,it is proper for the gentleman to rise when the lady leaves the table. Then ,when she returns, you may also pull out her chair to help her sit.

a while ago i went out to a fine dining establishment with my folks for dinner. at another table was a former politician who was with his wife. this couple are well into their 80's now. the man got up when his wife left the table and also stood up again when she returned. i sat in awe of this gentleman. they have been married for over 50 yrs and he still does that for his wife. i thought it was amazing and asked my dad why i had never seen him do that for my mother.
so yes, i think it is very classy.

Oh, how I would appreciate a nice guy who would stand up when I sit or leave my chair at a table. I think lots of women would........ it's just that they don't say it!!

I was brought up to do that, also when a lady enters a room. It certainly doesn't sound PC now, though, in this age of equality and liberation; so I seldom do it now, unless I know that the "lady" is a lady, and not a female who is going to bash me for it.

While good manners are always in style, this is a tad old fashioned. Pushing in her chair when u sit down for dinner is fine. anything else may be overkill.

Yes. There was a day when any real gentleman stood when a lady got up and stayed stood up until she started walking away. He stood again when she returned.

Depends, if it is a lady your dating, or a family member cool.

If you are diner with a bunch of coworkers who are equal to you in position it may be seen as pretentious or as an overture, stay seated.
