First of all congrats on wanting to get your first tattoo. Yes all artist have there preference in what to use. I have had both used on my tattoos. The con with the cloth is if you leave it on to long it will stick to the new tattoo. But that is easily fixed with getting it damp with warm water and slowly remove it. The saran wrap works good. But you don't want to leave it on to long because you skin cant breath. Most artist will tell you to leave both on no longer the one hour. This lets the new tattoo stop bleeding and clot to start the healing process.
Just remember this when you get your new tattoo read and follow the care instructions provided by your artist and your tattoo will heal great!

I've had both (on different tattoos, obviously). When I had dressings used the advice was to leave it on for just a couple of hours and then take it off (wetting it if necessary) rather than leaving it on for hours on end, and I never had any problems with this.
I must say I found cling film (saran wrap) rather unpleasant; it sort of slithered around. Having said that, it did have the advantage that I could see the tattoo through it, and didn't have to wait in suspense until I could take the dressing off and look at it again. And this tattoo healed fine, too; from that point of view it seemed not to make a great deal of difference.

I have many tats and always use saran wrap
you don't leave it on for very long and it won't stick to your skin
Cloth could stick to your tat and could hurt coming off
Good luck

you only need it covered for an hour or two then it needs air to heal. Do not use saran wrap unless it is a big piece.

The artist who did my dragon used saran wrap and had me wear it overnight. The tattoo healed just fine....no scabbing. The artist who did my last tattoo finished up at 10:00 pm. He used sterile telfa pads (like gauze pad with plastic on one side.) He taped them on and I slept overnight with the tattoo covered. The next morning I removed it. The pad tricks the body into thinking a scab has formed. So the tattoo itself never had any scabbing. To see pics of both my tattoos (pics taken right after they were uncovered and washed off in a shower) go to my 360 page

i have always had saran wrap. it seems like the gauze would stick to the skin. my artist recommends wearing the saran wrap until you wake up in the morning and to wash it well and then not cover it again. it just seems like if you wore gauze all night it would stick. most artists just stick to one thing tho and don't give you a choice of which to use.

First off congrats on getting your 1st tattoo. I got my first tattoo on march 7 2007. I got mine done on my lower back and after she was done.. She put moisturizer on it and then i just pulled my shirt over it. I think it depends on where you get your tattoo done as to if you are gonna have to have anything over it. My brother got his 1st one 2 months ago. On his arm and he wore a tank top, so she put saran wrap over it for 3 hours. But if its somewhere where clothing will cover it, they might not put anything over it.

the artist who did mine put saran wrap on it. you only leave it on for a few hours so i dont think it matters that much- just let the artist put whatever they usually use and worry more about doing good aftercare. good luck!

At least the first 3-4 nights, saran wrap. reason...wont stick to the tattoo, use bacatracin, not vasoline.
1st moring its going to look like one hell of a mess...dont worry about it, wash it and put ointment, thin coats..
10 times a day or more. if it starts feelin like sandpaper...put it 20 times a day. do not let it get a scab.
