not eating after 6 pm is one of the best way to lose as much muscle mass as possible when on a fat reduction diet. the metabolism "slows" at night it does not stop. the body is a 24HR a day 365 day a year machine. if you stop eating at 6 pm and don't eat again until breakfast at 6-7 am your body has now been in starvation mode for over 8-9 hours. starvation mode begins when the contents of the gastrointestinal tract are completely empty. this is usually 3-4 hours after the last meal depending on the content.

people always wonder why bodybuilders and fitness competitors look the way we do. it's because we give our bodies the right nutrients as many times a day is possible. we do not starve ourselves for extended periods of time. we eat every 3-4 hours up until going to bed, whatever time that may be. as the day progresses you reduce the carbohydrate intake as the activity level is usually low at night. at night the meals become protein with some health fats. this keeps insulin levels stable and cortisol levels low. this is how you get the body lean, not by starving it.

the people that are always telling others not to eat after 6pm etc, are never the ones that actually have a six-pack and muscle. if you want to have muscles and be lean then eat light meals at night until you go to bed.

if you are trying to lose weight the best thing for anyone to do is eat little and often eat healthy meals and exercise. i find it easier to do half an hour on my treadmill at home at least at home you can exercise when you want for how long you want without any gym fees but if you get peckish after your nightly meal try having a piece of toast the worst thing i find is going to bed peckish or hungry because i for one can't sleep like that and what harm is a piece of toast going to do?! your body needs food in it's system to get the metabolism working for you to lose weight - no food means the metabolism isn't working and no weight comes off your body that's why eat just a little bit here and there throughout the day a piece of toast or a sandwich - even a piece of toast and then walking up the stairs will get the metabolism going and help with the weight loss!!

Of course- it all depends what time you are going to bed. If you're up until 1am, you might get a little hungry.

But yes. ideally- we would eat a big breakfast, a medium sized lunch and a small dinner. Not surprisingly- your body doesn't use a lot of energy when it's sleeping, and will more likely store that food as fat.

It really works. After 4pm is even better if you can do it.
