"Würmchen" in this context does not mean "little worm"; "Marienwürmchen" is an old variation of "Marienkafer", i.e. ladybug.
The text is from a very well known Romantic collection of German folk songs , "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" (German, lit. The Youth's Magic Horn, referring to a cornucopia), compiled (and heavily edited) by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano, and published in Heidelberg, Germany between 1805 and 1808.
