As the others have said they're variaties of coal. Anthracite is a high quality coal and although it doesn't produce much flame it burns at a very high temperature and gives off a lot of heat - the two things that are needed for a good open fire.

Lignite is a much poorer quality coal and tends to be used more by industry (power stations etc). It's also a lot cheaper and more abundant.
