I recently sprained my ankle and was prescribed vicodin for the pain at night (My entire leg cramps from the hip down and I get a constant numbing pain from the discomfort). The trauma also brought back anxiety attacks and I have xanax for that. I hate taking vicadin because it makes me feel loopy in the morning. WIll xanax work to get me to sleep and forget the pain? Will Ambien do the same trick. Or should I just go with the vicadin?

All of those are a cocktail for addiction.

Take the Vicodin early at night, if you must.

Trauma???? For a sprained ankle??? Sounds shady to me. Xanax is very addictive. I suggest you quit that crap now.

Ambien will help you sleep, but it is very addictive as well.

I wouldn't take any three of those medications for more than three days.

Do not take xanax or ambien unless you have to. Those tranquilliser and sleeping pill prescription drugs are so addictive and have the most horrendous mental and physical withdrawal symptoms you could imagine that it would make heroin look like a walk on the beach. Stick with the vicadin. It will treat your pain. Lower the dose if you can. If you have to take vicadin for a long period of time gradually cut the dosage down over a few weeks as some people can get irritable and get stomach cramps etc coming off opiate pain killers.

Take the Xanax rather than Vicodin, unless you are in pain severe enough that you feel the need to take extra Xanax. In that case just take Vicodin.

Xanax will get you to sleep the first couple of nights, but you shouldn't rely on it. That's what Ambien is for.

One last thing, since you are taking these for an injury, be sure to save some. When the pain starts to fade, don't just stop taking the medication all at once. You will have rebound pain, and could become addicted. When you get to the end of your prescription, start cutting them in half until you don't need them anymore. I have seen many people get injuries and then get hooked on their pain meds. This is one of the best ways to lessen the withdrawl symptoms. A couple of Tylenol can also help when you are ready to taper off the doses.

And I'm sure you already know to limit your alcohol intake with any of these.

Hope this helps.

Stick with the currently prescribed medication for pain. Xanax & Ambien will do nothing for the pain.

You are prescribed certain medications for certain conditions. If the vicodin isn't helping with the pain, you need to call your doctor and ask for something else. You really should not be trying to self medicate using other drugs you have available. That is how addictions begin.

I would just take the vicadin since it works well.

Xanax is for anxiety, Ambien for sleep, Vicoden for pain.
Take whichever med was given to you to treat whichever symptom you have.

Excuse me. A medicinal mind set may not be the problem here. As a proponent of natural means, may i suggest alternative pain management.
Sprains are very painful; rest- ice-compress- elevate. (rice)
WebMd is a good source of reasonable info.
a few commonsense rules can alleviate most of the pains. Deep breathing exercises help to focus the mind away from hurtful thoughts. total body awareness is a trip along the self.
Create areas of restful thought within yourself, use music to channel the rest.
Libraries carry Dr Andrew Weil' s books on wellness, or access his natural theories on the web.
Last, but not least, if you are dependent upon medical care, do consult your Physician before jumping into a wholesome alternative, you may not appreciate having to deal with total withdrawal along with a painful leg.
strong mind to you! and watch where you put that foot!
