It started in the 1800's. Gee, I guess Jesus and Paul forgot to put it in the bible. Oh wait, maybe it is just b.s.!

Most of what you will read about the end times are pre-millennial views: the view that Christ's return will usher in a future millennium of Messianic rule mentioned in the book of Revelation before the final judgment. The believers of this doctrine also hold to the notion of a Rapture of the righteous beforehand.
Others hold that there will be only one second coming of Christ, at the time of the Final Judgment.
Then there are mixtures involving the views of the seven year tribulation and whether it is happening now, occurs later, etc.
These doctrines all fall under the general heading known as the study of end times, or eschatology.
For explanations of the various eschatological beliefs see: http://www.religioustolerance.org/millenni.htm
I am a Amillennialist. I believe we are currently living in the Millennium and in the Tribulation period. Events described in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 and in most of the book of Revelation have already happened. To me the Antichrist is figurative and not a real person. I believe that the Kingdom of God is today present in the world through the presence of the heavenly reign of Christ, the Bible, the Holy Spirit and Christianity. Both good and evil continues in the world until the current Church Age ends suddenly when Christ returns to the sky above the earth. Then the Rapture immediately occurs. The Redeemed are transported to heaven where they will adopt spiritual bodies. The rest of humanity will be condemned at this time to eternal punishment. The world will be abandoned. History is no more.

Jesus himself made these statements in answer to questions from his followers. The rapture is described in Matthew 24:40,41,42. The word rapture itself is not used but the description of the event is clear. It refers to the taking up of believers. Because of the setting, many believe that this will actually occur before the beginning of the worst of the tribulation.
Matt. 24:40
Two men will be in a field, one will be taken and the other left. Matt:24:41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one wll be taken and the other left. Matt: 24:42 Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.

"Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep (die), but we shall all be changed- in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."-1 Corinthians 15:50-52
"For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know undil the flood came and took them all away, so also will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left. Watch, therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming." -Jesus, Matthew 24:38-42

You're kidding, right? I'll admit, the word "rapture" isn't anywhere to be found, but the concept is definetly there.
1Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1Th 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
This is only one example. Circa 60 AD

The concept of rapture is in the Bible, in my Douay-Rheims Bible it does not say the word rapture but it is talking about the rapture. Here it is from the First Epistle of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians 4:16
Then we who are alive, who are left, shall be taken up together with them in the clouds to meet Christ, into the air, and so shall we be always with the Lord. Hope this answers your question.

It is a word given to the idea in some bible verses claiming that when Jesus appears there will be two people working and one will be taken and the other left behind. It sites some different examples. I don't believe any of it though.

13Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage each other with these words.

It is from the Bible. I don't know what I think of it but there is a verse that says two women will be working in a field on the last day, one will dissapear the other will remain. Then it goes on to talk about others dissapearing who are worthy. That is where the idea came from. I think its in revelation.

RAPTURE
Rev.10:6 And sware by Him that liveth for ever and ever, Who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:
TIME NO LONGER
Rev.10:7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as He hath declared to His servants the prophets.
SEVENTH ANGEL WHEN HE BEGINS TO SOUND
I Cor.15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
FLESH AND BLOOD CANNOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM
I Cor.15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
ALL BE CHANGED, NOT JUST THE CHURCH
I Cor.15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
AT THE LAST TRUMP, SEVENTH
I Thes.4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
THE TRUMP OF GOD, SEVENTH
I Thes.4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
THE CLOUDS
The word “the” is not in the Greek manuscripts. Clouds is used by Paul for a throng.
Heb.12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
THE AIR
The word “air” Greek (aer) means “to breathe, respire”, NOT SKY. In other words the breath of life or spirit. Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God.
II Thes.2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto Him,
OUR GATHERING TOGETHER UNTO HIM
II Thes.2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
NOR BY LETTER AS FROM US, FIRST THESSALONIANS
II Thes.2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
LET NO MAN DECEIVE YOU BY ANY MEANS
The sequence of events is Satan first, then the Lord’s day.
Rev 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
Rev 11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
TWO CANDLESTICKS
Rev 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.
CANDLESTICKS ARE CHURCHES
Yet there are men that teach the church is raptured. Men that teach that flesh and blood is taken and others left behind. It’s nonsense when you study His Word.
