I work for a major electronics store. Your best bet is to have it on the floor, across from where the main system is. If that can't be done, then in a corner facing inward, towards where the people listen. The walls help amplify and echo the sound.

sub-woofers produce bass frequencies which move with equal force in all directions , these frequencies also move slower and have more mass (yes they actually are heavier! ) that is why you can "feel" the bass. they want to move along ground and will sound better if you do so. this also allows you to put it any where in the room & free up space for center speaker wich is what you want for surround sound (try a powered computer speaker) of course you need a surround processor for it all to work correctly.

Subwoofers are designed to create that staggering low rumbling. in case you have it set precise (there is in many situations a putting on the lower back), it would vibrate your entertainment midsection. you're no longer getting the authentic rich base till that's on a great floor. in case you do in comparison to the way it seems, you could conceal it at the back of furnishings as long as that's no longer up against something. If it has a speaker commencing on the backside, that's made to sit down down up off the floor like on spikes.
