We got married at a pirate faire (an outdoor event similar to a Renaissance faire), so our wedding was, naturally, pirate-themed. Our guildmates helped throw everything together, and we had a great wedding right in our encampment. The guild mistress, who is an excellent writer and a good friend, had written the vows that had to do with the sea and the "ship that is our marriage", and staying together til the "Davy Jones locker" do us part. The minister (also one of the guildmates) was dressed in his best pirate coat and hat, and sported a shiny gold earring. The flowerboy was an 8-year-old disguised as Bootstrap Bill Turner, complete with seashells glued to his face, and the rings were placed in a small treasure chest carried by another young pirate acting as a ringbearer. Talented guild musicians performed the song about the pirate bride right after the ceremony, and then all of us, including some onlookers, headed down to the lake shore with cannons and flintlocks in tow to finish it off with a blackpowder salute. The rest of the night was dedicated to polishing off ample supplies of rum and other similar libations - it was a ton of fun.

Hi and congratulations! Once you put the word "venue" in any sentence involving weddings, you can throw out the word "cheap." Other than going to a restaurant, you will not be able to rent a venue and have food provided on a small budget. I agree with the others. Why not go to a nice park. Unless you are having your wedding at a church, you could even do the wedding AND reception at the park. Look around your area as to what is available. Some places have little gazebos that you can be married in. Then....bring in a picnic lunch for everyone. If you want to do a BBQ, I'm sure your family and friends would be willing to help out. Plus...when I think "hippyish," I'm thinking some meadow somewhere. Ohh.....fun! You can even do a hippyish wedding dress and get married barefoot!

I will be attending a medieval theme wedding this summer, where the bride will be riding down the aisle (outside wedding) on a horse. I've been to a renaissance style wedding which was a lil more Tudor inspired than I like so I didn't like the dresses at all. And I've been to a Halloween wedding. While it wasn't in the cemetary, she did have everyone in masks. The groomsmen all had a Phantom of the Opera style mask and the girls had mardi gras type feathered masks. Very formal and elegant though. Black, white and silver were the colors. They had one of those mad-hatter cakes.
One of my friends is planning on having an Alice in Wonderland wedding (her favorite movie of all time), with all the bridesmaids in Alice costumes I believe. I forgot what she will be wearing.
I'd have the bridesmaids either all in the same style dress but different colors, or the same color but different styles. If you do both, there is nothing that really seperates them as bridesmaids.
You'll probably change your mind when you are in the planning stage 100 times though. I originally wanted a completely different wedding. I changed from wanting a medieval/renaissance style (though more in concept than in completely literal) with the bridesmaids in different colors and me in white/ivory. Then I wanted an October wedding, with long sleeves and the bridesmaids in dark--either hunter green or navy blue. Ended up going with a tropical theme wedding in June, with bridesmaids in turquoise.
So I think a wacky wedding sounds like a great idea, as long as it suits both you and your fiances style. But you want to keep it classic enough that you don't look through pictures later on and think "that was horrible--what was i thinking". Definitely look at the mad hatter cakes though. I bet you'll love them!

Phases come and go....you might feel like this now, but I wouldnt go buy anything! You dont even have a FI yet, lol. But I have seen some weird weddings, they are ok. I feel like the represent the bride and groom together. I cant imagine marrying anyone else than the person I am enagaged to, but if I had to think about a wedding with anyone else (god forbid) it would be totally different. I think everything down to the style of music you play represents who you are as a COUPLE. Not just the bride or the groom. So when you meet that lucky man, figure out what your relationship is like together....If tradition fits, go for it....if it's more appropriate to be held under water (they have weddings under water now) then go for that. Your wedding represents the style of the relationship, not the single person.
