I had two Grandmothers - though I can only remember one -and both were called Grandma. There was a lady I called Nana; my Uncle's mother and because she lived pretty close to us, when my cousins came to stay, we'd all go and visit Nana but to be honest, I thought it actually was her name since I equated Grandmother with Grandma. My Mam became Grandma to my sister and brother's children (even though my ex sister in law thought it was a little hoity toity and why couldn't she accept 'Nana?', I tried explaining that I had two Grandmas but she still thought it was Mam putting airs and graces on), my aunts are Grandma and my sister is going to be Grandma ... eventually (Hurry up, I need children to buy for, adults are boring).

Me? I can't have children but if I had then, yes, I'd have been a Grandma too. It wouldn't occur to me to be anything else. However, when they do start begetting, I WILL be referred to as Great Aunty Elaine and heaven help them if they forget it.

I like the Russian for Grandma - it's Baboushka ... Baba for short.

In Ponjabi, Grandad is Nana and Grandmother is Nani

In French - it's Grandmere ('grohnmare')

One is Grandma and the other "Meema." Be careful using foreign languages. My Dad called my halfsister a nickname that the other side of the family taught him for years before he found out it meant "stinky monkey."

I like the German form, Oma or Omi and the Spanish word abuela, but I addressed mine as nanny + first name when I was little and nan when I was older.

My grandma's name was Rosa and everybody including all the in-laws would call her Mama Rosa.

In the Netherlands my kids used to call their grandma Oma and to my mother abuelita.

When I was a kid I called one Gran and the other Nanny. Then when I got older Nanny felt childish, so I now call her Nan.

I used to call my grandmother gran or big yin. She was only 4'10" and I'm 5'8" so it was a bit of a joke.... i was her wee yin. I live in the Canaries now and most kids here call their grans "abu" (aboo) short for abuela, sounds kinda cute though

My grandmother was always "Mamgu" -- pronounced "Mam-ghee". It is the South Wales word for grandmother and literally means "beloved mother".
The girls next door to me used to call their grandmother "Nanny" and I once tried this on Mamgu, who was deeply offended, as to her it sounded like a goat!
