I am an atheist. I will answer your question with the upmost honesty because I want you to understand as much as you do. However, I must clarify something first. It is NOT the case that atheists want nothing more than proof of the existence of God. Atheists choose not to believe in God for many reasons, not all include a lack of proof. For many, myself included, they choose not to believe in God because the very concept does not make sense, and the God depicted by the major religions definitely does not make sense. So, it is of no surprise to them that there is no proof of God's existence. Evidence or proof might be more persuading, but the concept will still be unclear.
Now, to answer your question:
Proof for me would be that when I die (and I know I have died), I meet God and everything is explained to me so that I can understand. EVERYTHING. Hell, even if I still had some kind of conciousness after death I might be persuaded. Until then, I will always be a skeptic.

Asking an Atheist what would be proof enough for them to believe in a God is a waste of time.
Thor, Zeus, Coyote, Yahweh, and Osiris could invite them all to a poker game and discuss things with them, and they'd still not believe.
*shrug*
It doesn't really matter, honestly. They've made that choice and it's not your place, really, to try to change their choice.
Many say that a God would have to show themselves to them.
That's a hot load of arrogance, right there... that's an IMPRESSIVE load of arrogance. And if they had any clue as to the arrogance of the person saying this... they'd understand just how much arrogance it is.
You know... because the Gods have nothing better to do than to appear to some jackass who's just going to find some other reason to disbelieve and probably insult their followers to boot.
Don't try to convince Atheists...
It's like trying to teach a pig to dance...
You're just wasting your time and irritating the Atheists.

It would be the same for any clam of the existence of something supernatural. I would need credible evidence.
Consider what you would need from someone who claimed they had telepathic powers or that were descended from someone who did. You might be intrigued, but you'd want to see something that would back up their claim.
My lack of belief simply comes from a skeptical approach to the world. I do not have faith in God's absence. It is simply that, "There is God." is a declaration, and requires credible evidence to be believed.
Outside of maybe being raised in you tradition or some feeling you have about the existence of god, do you have anything that would stand as credible evidence of his existence. Please use the same standard of evidence that you would require to believe that some other God from a different religion was real.
I don't see any problem with you having faith, which dose not require proof. I will however, continue to doubt the supernatural until there is a reason not to.

There is no real proof that I would accept, and I am not being closed minded. I just think it's impossible. I can't conceive of any possible way you could prove it. Anything you say could have an alternative explanation. Even if God split the moon in half and turned one side into peanut butter and the other into jelly, the two most likely explanations are 1) Hallucination and 2) Advanced technology. Each are far more likely than God.

Gosh, ok, where to begin?
God could show up, that would be a heckuva start.
A miracle could happen that could not in any way be explained by any other means whatsoever. Choruses of cherubs emanating from a doorknob...fish turning into loaves of wonder bread or vice versa...the dead rising...animals talking....my uncle Ed could grab the check before anyone else does...something like that.
Jesus could show up on my doorstep and be so OBVIOUSLY Jesus and not just an impersonator that I would KNOW it was him.
The entire sky could go dark, and a voice could boom out that would be heard be every person on the planet in their own language and declare itself to be the voice of God.
The Red Sea, the Dead Sea, The Caspian Sea, or indeed ANY sea could open up and split apart in defiance of all logic and physics and it would be reliably documented.
A burning bush on a remote mountaintop could speak to me.
An angel could visit. Not something that LOOKED vaguely like an angel, but something that I KNEW was an angel just by looking at it.
Everyone fighting everywhere in the world could lay down their weapons and embrace each other like brothers.
I could come up with more, but I think you get the idea.

Agnostics could well fall into this catagory too... they too need proof before they would be willing to commit to any particular "way"...
As an agnostic, I guess I believe there is something out there, God, aliens, giant space turtles with elephants on thier shells (any Terry Pratchett fans out there will understand that!)... But I don't know what it is, and I will not submit to anything I don't have proof of...
I guess I would need a real conversation with "the creator", face to face and have a few questions answered... Selfish, perhaps... But that's the way it would have to be...

I have no idea what the proof would be, but I'd like to see it.
Oh, about love: In a diverse genetic pool, sexual reproduction allows for positive mutations to more quickly permeate a population. So that's why there are two sexes. Why love? The attraction of two paired organisms allows parents toward each other mutually increases the likelihood of survival of the young.
Two-parent families are stronger biologically too.

I'm not seeking proof, because I don't care about proof. Personally I think the gods depicted the major religions are absolute monsters. I'm happy they don't exist. And if they weren't monsters I still have no use for god. I don't buy into the concept of "sin" therefore there's nothing to be 'saved' from.

i understand your need for an answer here, but you aint gonna find a good one. there is a god, but you nor i understand him/she/it. what is written in the torah, bible, and koran cannot be true. how can it be possible that 5 billion people all believe in the same thing and yet cant agree on any of it? these books are all written by men. and all were written recently(in the over all scheme of things), but none within the age of reason(except for some crazy religions that make NO sense). you cannot dispute evolution. it has been proven, and even if it hadnt, you could see it in everyday life(milk cows, chicken laying larger eggs, docile pets). i find it hard to believe noone had a hand in the "creation" of the universe(s), but i find it harder to believe that someone waited 4.6 billion years for people to "become" before they took a role in defining what is wrong and what is right. before people, there were dinosaurs, but the people that wrote the bible(etc) had no way of knowing it, because they were dumb hicks trying to sell snake oil to the populace.

Atheists are not searching for proof. We/they may have at one time but a lot of us got over that before we arrived at this point. You don't need to apologize for anything. We don't get offended. We don't care if you like what we think or not.
I know for a fact that there is not a loving god who cares for us and looks out for us. It is not hard to figure that out. Any other "god" does not mean diddly squat to me.
